Alors qu'ils travaillaient sur "Le Pirate Des Caraïbes 2", Johnny Depp et le réalisateur du film Gore Verbinski eurent l'idée de faire reprendre des chansons de marins et pirates par les artistes qu'ils admiraient. Ils firent appel à Hal Willner (reconnu pour ces hommages à Walt Disney, Charles Mingus et Kurt Weil pour coproduire l'entreprise. Ils enregistrèrent près de 60 titres et en sélectionnèrent 43 pour ce premier opus. Avec les participations exceptionnelles et inédites de Bono, Sting, Lou Reed, Antony & Bryan Ferry, Gavin Friday, Richard Thompson, Dave Thomas... ainsi qu'Andrea Corr. L'album, dénommé Rogue's gallery, est sorti le 22 août 2006.
